Paris Wardrobe Travel Planning I: Where to begin?
March is the first sign spring is coming and we begin making summer travel plans.
Paris is on my list for this year, so now’s the time to assess my closet and identify any
holes. It will be a mix of work and vacation time over two weeks, so it will require
versatile looks and garments.
Color rule: I’m beginning with my two-color travel rule—blue and white with a heavy
reliance on accessories. When traveling to international destinations, don’t pack neon
colors or big, bold prints and labels. Aim instead for small prints and solids of luxurious
fabrics that resist wrinkling. The first step is to pull anything I already have that meets
my color rule before I can figure out what’s missing.
Shoes: Tackle shoes early on because you need to have time to break them in if
you’re shopping for new ones. Sneakers have become universally accepted and I will
include them along with one pair of heels, a ballet flat, and a walking sandal. I will
essentially build my outfits from the shoes-up.
Travel Outfit: If it’s an international flight, have a traveling outfit that works throughout
your trip, particularly if you’re going multiple locations. Make sure you choose clothing
which allows for running for a flight and hoisting bags into the overhead.
Layering: Layering is your secret weapon, as you change temperatures, locations, and
activities. Everything you pack must go with everything else in your suitcase, the two-
color rule is invaluable here.
Tammy’s Truism: Begin early, be strict on your wardrobe rules while identifying what you need and want for your trip. You can always add more later.
Next Up, Part II: Identifying the right pieces for a 10-day trip.
