Dressing for the Virtual Meeting

With the regular use of online meetings, you need to pay attention to how you dress just as if you were in person. There are several things to consider which may be unique to the online meeting: the undertone of your surrounding environment, as well as your own.

Undertone of your complexion is defined in several ways: light or dark coloring and whether you have a cool undertone or a warm one. If you surround yourself in warm undertones and you are a cool, you will look drawn and tired.

When meeting online, though you only have to worry about what you’re wearing from your shoulders up, you need to seriously consider the background for your meeting and how it looks on camera. The best choice is a backdrop that’s not too busy, clothes included.

First, choose a space that is complementary to your undertone. If you’re a cool, then plan to sit at a window with the blue sky behind you or where there’s a cool-colored painting like red and blue that appears behind you. Plants work well for this exercise too--something simple like an orchid, which come in both warm and cool colored blooms, is clean and easy.

Next, buy a desk lamp or ring light that has warm and cool options for your lighting.

This ensures you have the right type of lighting that’s best for your undertone. They are inexpensive and readily available online.

Finally, choose garments and makeup which match your undertone and the style for the meeting. If it’s less formal, your makeup and top can be simple. If it’s an interview, however, make sure your jewelry goes well with your top and determine whether you need to layer clothing for a more formal look.
