Dressing to Network
Whether you’re seeking a new job, or doing your job, everyone needs to network to some extent. In terms of dress, this is a bit tricky because when networking, it’s not a formal interview you’re dressing for, but you want to make a good impression.
The first consideration is where and what time of day you’re networking: is it a breakfast of 20 with a speaker or is it a happy hour in between conference breakout sessions? Are you networking over lunch? What if the person you’re meeting is working from home that day?
The goal when networking is to look put together without going over the top, which is a fine line. Here, let the time of day and location help narrow your options.
If it’s a daytime event, one easy option is monochromatic dressing which always looks effortless. Add a contrasting color cardigan can make it a more casual look; a blazer brings more formality.
If it’s a cocktail mixer, using accessories with a bit of flair can give any outfit a boost when going for day to night. Choose something either with a bit of sparkle, like a rhinestone belt, or a bright color, like red shoes or jewelry. These will serve as a great conversation piece.
In the end, whatever you choose, the most important factor is that you’re confident and that your outfit reflects your authentic self. Networking for most of us is already uncomfortable, so you need to feel good in what you’re wearing.
