Elements of Style Part I
Most of us can’t easily define our own style from the 7 universal ones (dramatic,
romantic, elegant, sporty, traditional, alluring, creative) but when looking at others, you
know immediately. This two-part series is about indicators and preferences of these
styles.
A garment’s elements define its style and what elements you’re drawn to are indicators
of your own style. Such elements consistently catch your eye while shopping and even
your favorite labels in your wardrobe reflect certain styles.
Dramatic style tends to: like high fashion; you prefer structured garments in black or
dramatic contrast; statement garments are your style; you gravitate toward luxury
fabrics that have a strong line and defined waist; and you prefer bold makeup and hair
and love statement jewelry. Here, your designers range from Versace to Zara.
Romantic style has: ruffles and small floral prints; you tend to like fringed items or
appliques or embroidery; you lean toward flowing and sometimes sheer fabrics; pastels
are what you prefer; velvet is always a favorite; and you gravitate toward antique-
looking jewelry and prefer a natural makeup with long hair. Anthropologie is one of your
favorite stores, as is Sundance, and you likely have some Rebecca Taylor pieces in
your closet.
Elements of elegant are: a perfectly coordinated outfit; you prefer dresses with a
matching jacket; tone-on-tone, monochromatic dressing is a “go to”; cashmere and silk
and closely woven knits are in your wardrobe; neutral colors dominate your wardrobe
and you prefer tailor-fitted garments. Here, you tend to have accessories or clothing
from Armani and Chanel or St. John, but also your wardrobe includes Donna Karan. In
terms of makeup, you tend to like a refined look with a neutral lip.
