Shoe Capsule: What Every Girl Needs

With the return to work, we’re all reconsidering our wardrobes, which should include our

shoes too. One wardrobe strategy I use with my clients is a capsule—a subset of

garments that mix and match, each going with 3 other capsule items.

You should be able to do the same with your shoes. Many of us, however, aren’t

strategic when buying shoes, as they are typically for a specific outfit or happen to catch

our eye.

Every shoe collection should include: flats; a low heel; pumps; knee high or mid-calf

boots; a pair of booties; dressy and regular sneakers; sandals; and winter boots. You

have many choices but start by making sure you have at least black, brown, or navy of

the above.

Once you have these colors covered, then be brave and branch out. This can be done

with either embellishments or through color. Gone are the days where our accessories

match one another. However, be mindful your shoes aren’t competing against other

accessories.

I love details that take a shoe to the next level, always seeking something unique. As

with handbags, I tend to opt for color, instead of playing it safe, once the basics are

covered.

Unique shoes can serve as a conversation piece too and they don’t have to be

expensive. A leopard print or a red shoe can easily call attention to your look in a fun

way which also happens to convey you’re confident.

As always, spend what you can afford, shoes can be an investment piece. When

spending at this level, make sure it’s not too trendy, as it should last years.

Tammy’s Truism: Regardless of your style or type, keep your shoes in good shape. Like it or not, people make judgements about you based on your shoes.
