Fashion Statement Pieces

Every closet should have a personal statement piece—something that caught your eye

and is a bit bolder than your norm. This piece may be over the top, but most

importantly, makes you feel confident. As a statement, it should be the first thing people

notice about your outfit. They come in the form of clothing and accessories, or even

your makeup.

I have found most of these pieces in my wardrobe at an outlet or a high-end

consignment shop. For some reason, it makes you feel better if you’re getting a good

deal and thus something you wouldn’t normally consider.

Now, I’m not saying buy a piece you won’t wear, but challenge yourself. Whether it’s

color, cut or fit, it’s something that makes you stand out while making you feel

empowered too.

For example, the Alice + Olivia Cina Skirt, a beautiful turquoise blue feather skirt. It’s

out of the comfort zone for most. But, if you consider how you wear it, it isn’t as daring

as you think. If you pair it with a black fitted sweater and a long black blazer and then

add a pair of black tights and boots, that “daring” piece has become balanced with more

subdued items. The end result is an outfit that’s “sexy and sophisticated” as Stacey Bendet says.

So, that’s the trick: safely pair something a bit over the top with other pieces that “quiet

down” your statement so that it isn’t overwhelming. The second trick is to make sure

you wear it at the appropriate venue—likely a nighttime event or dinner date, a much

safer for its debut. Personal statement pieces add a bit of punch to your wardrobe and

confidence, totally worth it, if done right.

Tammy’s Truism: Statements can be an accessory, like bold earrings, or something

as simple as a colorful pant or skirt.
