Preppy Redux
Mid-way through summer, you’re likely used to wearing any new clothes you bought this
season and may have the wardrobe blahs. You can reinvigorate your outfit creativity by
pairing what you have in your closet in a new way. One of the easiest styles to do this
with is preppy.
The term “preppy” comes from preparatory and Ivy League schools whose “uniform” is
truly an American-derived style of khakis, cardigans, Bermuda shorts, plaids, and
button-down shirts. This sporty look is loose-fitting while still looking crisp.
First, a button-down shirt, be it white or printed, is a great place to start building your
preppy look. Next, add shorts or a skirt in khaki or navy—both universal preppy colors.
Loafers or deck shoes are a tried-and-true shoe for a preppy look, but so are Keds.
Adding socks to your loafers steps up your preppy style.
Linens and cotton are the predominant fabrics used in preppy labels such as Ralph
Lauren or Banana Republic. Plaids of pinks and blues add additional flair to any preppy
outfit, and many of its traditional looks pair 3-4 color combinations.
You can complete your outfit with smart accessories like a headband, a sweater vest, or
a strand of pearls. Layer your shirts with a tank and roll up the sleeves, tying your shirt
at the waist, giving your layering a more casual look.
Believe it or not, you’ll be surprised how many of these elements you’ll find in your
closet already. If you find you feel like your authentic self in this style, make a list of
items not in your wardrobe for your next shopping trip.
Tammy’s Truism: The preppy style is all-American, and in its most traditional form, includes the colors of red, white, and blue.
