Refining Your Closet
As we approach August, this is the perfect time to not just clean out your closet—in
anticipation of upcoming tax-free sales days and a change of seasons—but more
importantly, to refine it. What’s the difference, you say??
When cleaning out closets, we focus on ill-fitting, unworn, or over-worn items. To
”refine” your closet, you reverse the process: pull out your favorite, best-fitting clothes in
your wardrobe.
These are garments that make you feel like a million bucks, and the color and cut
suit you. Make sure to separate your closet clean and refining days to be the most
effective.
By only picking your most favorite items, that doesn’t mean discarding the rest. If you’re
picking most loved items, be it based on color, fabric, or fit, how much of your wardrobe
remains? Likely a lot. Are these favorites similar to styles or colors? If so, this may be an
insight into your favorite style, or what you gravitate towards when shopping.
Next, take the favorites and see how many outfits you can put together, filling any holes
with your remaining staples. Essentially, we’re looking to build a closet of only
“favorites”.
The end result is that you can determine which items are missing to complete a look
based on favorites. You also have a closet of things focused on what you love, reducing
that “I have nothing to wear” feeling.
Tammy’s Truism: When your outfit choices are based on favorites, it tends to make you more self-confident. By creating a list of needs and wants, you can maximize sales or points days, saving you both time and money.
