To Trend or Not to Trend

This spring there are some great trends, like the return of the peplum, one of my

favorites. The pilgrim collar, which is oversized and either squared or trimmed in frills to

the end of the shoulder has also made an appearance.

The collar instantly reminded me that not everyone should follow every trend. Even

though we all want to be fashionable, that doesn’t mean we should be buying the latest

of every style.

When considering purchasing a trending garment, ask yourself if it’s really part of your

existing style. If it isn’t, once the trend passes, you’re less likely to wear it again if it’s

already out of your comfort zone.

Additionally, you should carefully consider your coloring and body type when choosing

to buy something trendy, just like you would anything else. It’s a practical approach

that we all seem to forget as soon as we start thinking about buying something trendy.

When it comes to the pilgrim collar, if you’re petite, make sure it doesn’t overwhelm you

but instead is right-sized for your frame. If you have broad shoulders and your shape is

an inverted triangle, the pilgrim collar emphasizes your shoulders even more, so you

may want to find another of the season’s trends. This collar is a good one for those pear

shaped.

Finally, consider the cost-per-wear of a trendy garment, just like you would do for any

other purchase. If you’re unsure about how much wear it will get, choose a less—

expensive version.
