Travel Style Part II: Bringing Extra Life to Your Travel Garments
Now that you’ve mastered the two-color packing challenge, you’re well on your way. Next step is to accent your clothing with accessories. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is the easier exercise. Accessories are tough because you typically have too many to choices. Most are small, so you’ll be tempted to throw them all in your bag.
Topping off your travel outfits should be one or two over the top accessories. Choose one that’s big and one that’s sparkly and eye-catching. This can range from hair accessories—like the jewel-encrusted headbands that are hot right now—to rings, or a sequined scarf in bright colors.
When it comes to shoes, always make sure you have a pair of cute flip flops to wear to the spa or the beach. They’re easy to slip in a bag and come in handy if your feet hurt from touristing all day. Trust me, I’ve been there! Many use the rule of only taking only three pairs of shoes, but I’ve never been able to meet that goal. Here too, I recommend a little sparkle in what you choose, or a dramatic heel, it will go a long way.
Invest in a travel wrap and spend as much as you can afford. My preference is cashmere with a fur accent. A dark color won’t show spills and dry cleans easily. Buy it at the end of winter sales. Another great option would be Poshmark or The Real Real if you’re looking for designer brands. This is true too for a small travel purse. Though cross-body bags come and go, my recommendation is that you choose one with a chain strap to dress it up. If you have a leather strap, you can replace it with a chain, provided you can unhook it or tie a colorful scarf on it.
