Dressing to Stand Out in a Crowd
We’ve all attended large work-related functions, or are someone’s guest, and you’re
there to network. With the sea of attendees, where you need to get noticed, let your
outfit do some of the work for you.
First, use color to your advantage—here the more noticeable the better, as appropriate
for the event. For men, in particular, this means a unique tie or shirt that stands out.
For women, it could be an entire outfit of a single bright color or just pops of color
throughout.
When dressing to get noticed, allow your clothes to act as a conversation piece.
Choose an outfit that has lots of contrast or just bright colors alone; a unique print
may do too.
A noticeable pin, shoes, or scarf works well and when someone remarks about it, you’ve
created the opportunity to start a conversation. If you pick the right piece, it will be
remembered even after the event.
Once you find what works and feels authentic to you, use it as a formula over time. For
example, you may be in an industry like real estate where your job is to get noticed and
remembered. Here, you should develop a signature look that you can build upon over
time. For example, a blazer with unique details works great, even if the rest of your
outfit is unremarkable.
Done properly, you’ll be remembered by your signature item which literally becomes
your calling card, breaking the ice for you.
Tammy’s Truism: When choosing clothes that stand out, make sure they aren’t too trendy, so they don’t go out of style. Accessories are a less expensive way to stand out.
