Dressing for Travel

I recently travelled internationally and once I decided what I was packing, I tackled the challenge of travel clothes for the flight. Typically, I travel by car, so it had been some time since I’d been inside an airport.

I must say that I was horrified at what airline travelers were wearing—at least 1/3 were wearing flannel pajama bottoms accessorized with actual slippers. Another 1/3 were wearing leggings or short shorts with cropped tops. Come on people, you can do better!

In that moment, I realized people may need suggestions on what to wear, while traveling, since flying has become the same as riding the bus these days. Gone is all the glamour of flying but that doesn’t excuse the dress.

First and foremost, do not wear anything where your skin is directly touching an airline seat. Also, if you take your shoes off in security, wear socks to avoid picking up germs on your bare feet, which then gets into your shoe when you put them back on.

Next, with the advent of athleisure, you don’t have to sacrifice comfort to look put together. Invest in stretchy pants and tops and if that’s their main job in your wardrobe, consider buying them one size larger for added comfort.

Shoes matter. I always have this romantic idea of wearing heels to the airport but every trip I’ve even thought about it, the travel gods remind me because I end up running or walking fast with a roller bag in tow. My compromise is my embellished Jimmy Choo sneakers.

One final thought is consider wearing dark colors while flying so no one can see it until you get the chance to spot clean or change clothes if you spill.
