Elevated Outerwear
Given we’re deep into winter, I thought it was a good time to talk about outerwear and
taking your winter coat game up a notch. Any coat can become distinguishing when
adding the right elements.
The most obvious way to do this is to get a brightly colored or patterned scarf. A faux
fur infinity scarf or a big looped knit scarf also works. You can afford be bold here,
given they’re less than buying a new coat. When shopping, start with the first scarf you
notice, be it color or texture. If you find one out of your price range, ask the sales staff
when it might go on sale.
Another fun way to set yourself apart in the coat department is to have a furry zip-up
vest that you can layer over your existing coat. For example, I have a trim fitting black
puffer coat and I wear a black faux fur vest over it. It instantly changes my look, making
it and me look and feel a bit more glam.
One simple way to step up your coat look is a furry hat, earmuffs, or even fur-trimmed
gloves in a bright color. Make sure you choose the right materials for your weather—my
first pair of new red leather gloves were destroyed on a rainy day.
Finally, add the season’s hottest shoe—the Chelsea boot—in a coordinating color; think
about adding a coordinating belt for your coat too. Overall, elevating your winter coat
doesn’t take lots of work, just a little bravery!
Tammy’s Truism: When choosing your coat’s accessories, materials and care are
important, like dry cleaning or hand wash. Consider the feel of the material on your
neck and the likelihood of caring for makeup stains.
