Winter Capsule
You can create a winter capsule with 5 fundamental pieces. If chosen properly, they’re
all you need for the season, particularly if three of them are the same color.
Start with a lug sole boot that’s easy to care for: the Chelsea. The style’s adaptable,
slips on easily without laces, with countless versions available. I was a reluctant
convert to the lug sole, but it’s versatility during winter is unbeatable. Sorrel has some
fantastic options, but regardless of brand, opt for a topper that’s a patent synthetic for
an extra pop while remaining waterproof.
Next, is a layering sweater; aim for a longer, solid colored, open-front cardigan with knit
detailing that makes it interesting. Pick a color that suits you and it should be of
medium weight so layering over another sweater or a tank, depending on the weather,
is an option.
A critical capsule piece is a solid colored, ribbed turtleneck, which instantly creates a
slimming line. I have the same one in white, black, charcoal, and navy. Make sure it’s
washable since it’s a base layer. One beautiful option is silk, which maintains a subtle
sheen, adds warmth without the extra weight to your look—that’s why they’re a favorite
of the French.
The last two items are a puffer vest and a two-sided, patterned scarf. When picking
your puffer, it’s important the outside line creates a waist, overcoming the bulkiness of
the jacket. For your scarf, choose a relatively large one that can double as another
layer. I recommend cashmere since it rests on the neck, so plan to make this an
investment piece.
Together, these pieces provide interchangeable options to serve you in this season and
the next.
Tammy’s truism: Choosing the same color for three of your items, creates a look
that’s more put together.
