Shopping Strategies
Whether shopping for a specific event or the mood just strikes us, most of us don’t map
out our shop in advance.
The result: The 80% of your wardrobe you don’t wear.
You can save yourself money and time because shopping with a strategy is easier and
faster and you’re also not left searching a store’s entirety. Then you also don’t have to
try on…everything…they…have.
First, just before leaving the house, I recommend my clients try on their favorite garment
(that one that makes you feel like a million bucks) as a reminder of your standard: any
new clothes should make you feel the same as this most favorite piece.
The second step is to decide the purpose of the purchase—are you filling in holes in
your wardrobe, like basics, or is this a fun purchase/splurge? Once you determine that,
you’ve got your overarching goal.
For most, learning what you should be shopping for is a lifelong journey in trial and
error, AND I’m here to say it doesn’t have to be that way. Reduce the clutter in your
closet of unworn or ill-fitting items employing my favorite rules:
Rule 1: Shop for garments which match your undertone (cool/blue or warm/yellow).
Rule 2: Shop by fit, depending on your body type (hourglass, rectangle, etc.).
These rules quickly take the endless supply of clothing options and immediately create
a straw from which to view the world. If an item doesn’t meet both requirements, don’t
consider it, keep walking. Period!
Tammy’s Truism: At the end of the day, we feel more accomplished by having a plan,
and the same is true for buying clothing.
