Spring Travel

When planning a non-beach trip for spring, the weather may be cool and damp, but you

may also have the opportunity for some warmer days. If you’re planning on an active

trip—spending time outside and hiking and sightseeing, the best advice is layers, layers,

and more layers.

As always, I recommend starting early in planning your wardrobe, as well as limiting

your clothing choices to two or three colors. Though that may give you a bit of anxiety,

in the end, it means whatever is in your suitcase matches everything you packed by

sticking to the 2-3 color rule.

For a 10-day trip, you need a travel outfit, 3 pairs of shoes and 3 tops which have an

interesting print or detailing. Here, you want to make sure you have one embellished

top that’s a bit dressier for a dinner out.

When it comes to shoes, the 3-shoe limit is tough to keep. Here, I plan for one dressier

flat and 2 shoes for walking. For my dressier shoe, I’m packing my black patent loafer

as it is easily worn with jeans or a cute skirt and tights.

For this 10-day trip I’m planning on taking 4-5 shirts, 2 sweaters (one of which will be for

my travel outfit) and 3 pairs of jeans and layering jackets, one of which is a down vest. I

will also pack a dark wash jean that looks dressier but also have the travel outfit’s pant

available. I’ll pack two standard wash jeans for touring and sightseeing and one pair for

hiking.

The last thing I’m putting in my suitcase is loungewear that’s warm yet functional and

some fuzzy socks (which will also be worn on the plane). As always, scarves are a

great tool that doesn’t take up suitcase space to change your outfit and dress it up or

down.

Tammy’s Truism: Make the investment in a blanket-sized cashmere wrap that can be

a blanket inflight and adds elegance to any outfit—this is the time of year to find them

on sale.
