Swimsuits & Cover-ups
It’s swimsuit season again, bringing with it both dread and delight to all. Dread comes
from the painstaking task of swimsuit shopping and delight comes from thoughts of a
beach vacation. When shopping, keep in mind your body type and planned activities.
For example, a mother with young beachgoers has a different need than a woman
going for a girl’s weekend in Miami.
Today, shopping for swimsuits is a bit easier because many are made by body type and
there’s endless online retailers. For broader shoulders, consider wider straps for the top
of your suit. For those of us that would like to camouflage our lower half, tankinis and
short bikini skirts are a fantastic, popular options. Clothing lines, like J Crew, add
swimsuits to their summer collections, giving you choices reflecting their style, while
others sell suits by bra size.
Over the last few years too, cover ups have exploded. Gone is the era of sacrificing an
old shirt and shorts to be worn back and forth to the beach, subjecting them to
sunscreen stains. Whether it be going for lunch on the beach, or trekking for a facial at
the resort, there is now an entire subsection of clothing, depending on your
environment.
Today, cover-ups can be lacy or sheer making them somewhat alluring but are entirely
acceptable and very chic. The second category of coverups are of swimsuit material.
What I love is that they easily go over your suit but are substantial enough to wear as a
dress when going out. They range from bright prints to solids, and you can find
numerous details to highlight your best feature.
Overall, there are more options for beachwear than ever, but be patient with yourself
and start early.
Tammy’s Truism: If ordering online, a good rule of thumb is one of out of five items will
fit, so too for swimsuits.
