Transition Pieces for Spring
Now that we’re in spring, let’s talk about transition pieces, particularly for those yet to
see seasonal change. First, a transition piece is any garment that works in more than
one season and is a staple easily matched and layered into your existing wardrobe.
Spring transition pieces are typically made of materials which are lightweight but still
provide some warmth. Ideally, these multitasking garments also have added stretch or
room so you can layer them.
One fabric I love for a transition piece is silk. Everyone knows about silk long
underwear, but it’s an ideal topper piece, too, like a sweater. French women love silk
sweaters because, while providing warmth, they fit closer to the body and aren’t bulky.
Synthetics, at a lesser price point, mock the properties of silk, but they don’t breathe as
well, once layered.
Another great fabric for a transition piece is denim, and I love a denim jacket. The
weave of denim provides protection against the cold breeze, and you can easily wear a
t-shirt and sweater underneath it. Here, you can still add a scarf to your look, bundling
up as much as is needed, or in warmer months, simply throw it over a sundress.
In the end, transition pieces are any article of clothing, regardless of season, that’s able
to layer but can just as easily stand alone. For the most versatility, stick with neutral
colors when purchasing transition pieces. Straying away from your color norm, though
eye-catching, my make it less versatile, creating a wardrobe challenge.
Tammy’s Truism: Transition pieces need to have room for layering but should keep their shape after a day’s wear. They should be able to go with pants and just as easily a skirt or shorts and not look out of place.
