Winter Coat Basics
There are as many coat styles as there are moods and colors. With so many choices,
you should have at least the basics covered before venturing into trendier options and
non-classic hues.
First, the most basic and classic of all is the trench coat, which though the style is
consistent, comes in many lengths and refinements. Too, you may want to consider
whether it is lined or unlined.
Next is the puffer jacket, a throwback from the 70s, which currently dominates today’s
coat scene. When looking for a puffer, consider the average temperature where you
wear it due to different down or synthetic weights. Also, to avoid looking like a
marshmallow, some come with a belt giving it more shape.
Dress or swing coats are a great option for fancier occasions or to and from work. It’s a
flattering, feminine shape that mimics an A-line dress which flares at the bottom. To
balance it out, you may want to consider a fancy collar or an eye-catching scarf.
Long leather coats are everywhere this year and you can choose single or double
breasted. When purchasing, make sure the buttons are attached with heavy thread to
counter the weight of the leather. Ideally, each button should be attached with a small
inside anchoring button.
Finally, consider the color and the maintenance for any coat you purchase and read the
label. Lighter color coats can show makeup or other stains, which you may be able to
spot clean. Once you’ve purchased your coat, consider getting it tailored if the sleeves
are too long.
Tammy’s Truism: Some of my favorite coats I purchased off-season at an outlet mall. Always wear a scarf with your coats to protect the collar from discoloration.
